TikTok Influencers Driving Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication

A shadow economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with numerous of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Worries

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting products of uncertain source.

Several experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers try to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.

Service Response and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative content and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at residence.

After minutes of entering one community, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, stating to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should last, sellers give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these online products may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has already encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
