It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved figures like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared recently, offering a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
